华东理工大学原名华东化工学院，1952年由交通大学、震旦大学、大同大学、东吴大学、江南大学等校化工系组建而成。1956年被定为全国首批招收研究生的学校之一，1972年改名为上海化工学院，1980年8月恢复华东化工学院原名，1981年成为全国首批博士、硕士学位授予单位，1985年学校首次建立博士后科研流动站，1993年改为华东理工大学。

East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), formerly known as East China College of Chemical Engineering, was founded in 1952 by the chemical engineering departments of Jiaotong University, Orion University, Datong University, Soochow University, Jiangnan University and other universities. In 1956, it was designated as one of the first universities in China to enroll graduate students. In 1972, it was renamed Shanghai Institute of Chemical Technology. In August 1980, it was restored to the former name of East China Institute of Chemical Technology.
